SPF Roofing Systems

SPF Roofing Systems provide many benefits to building owners. The two most prominent benefits are waterproofing/leak prevention and insulation value. Many additional benefits also exist such as superior compressive strength, lightweight, self-flashing, durable and long lasting.

Sprayed Polyurethane Foam is applied as a liquid. It then expands approximately 30 times its original size, sealing all cracks and crevices and forming a hard, closed cell monolithic – seamless - roof surface. It is these seams in other roofing systems that are the root cause of all leakage issues. A small crack will develop along the seam and slowly expand, splitting open the entire seam along the length of the roof. This occurs ineveitably when water enters the crack, freezes and expands the existing gap. The Polyurethane foam dries within seconds after applied to the roof surface, thus resulting in a weather-tight roofing membrane that is fully adhered to the substrate. Because of the polyurethane's low weight, its' installation to an existing roof adds only a small load to the structure. It is therefore very effective in remedial applications. Polyurethane Foam adds excellent insulation value to the structure and utility bills will reflect the savings.

Upon the completion of the application of the SPF roofing, a protective layer of elastomeric coating or gravel is applied, allowing it to expand and contract with the changing seasons and other weather factors. This protective layer produces a durable weather resistant surface and that is sustainable to foot traffic.

Energy Star – Cool Roofs Program and Benefits
ENERGY STAR qualified roof coating products reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings, and can reduce energy bills by up to 50%. The Cool Roof Program defines certain standards for reflectivity, and maintenance of reflectivity, in roof coating systems. These light colored roof coatings reflect the suns heat and UV rays and often lower the temperature of the roof by up to 100 degrees.


During warm summer months, temperatures can reach 170° degrees F on a low-slope black asphalt roof. Much of the heat generated by absorbing the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation transfers to the building interior, and can have significant adverse effects on energy usage, driving up the cost.

In spray foam roofing applications, a light colored coating is always used. Light colored roof coatings reflect the suns heat and UV rays and often lower the temperature of the roof deck by up to 100° degrees F.

Coatings are usually installed in two stages: a base coat, and a final top coat. Granules are often embedded into the final coat and offer added protection against mechanical ultra-violet damage.

In time, these coatings will require maintenance, or replacement, but just like paint on your house, they can be removed and re-applied to keep your SPF roof system in peak performance for decades.

An SPF roof, like most other systems, will expand and contract during different climate conditions. It is very important that the protective coating is able to expand and contract with the SPF or serious damage can result in the form of cracks or delamination. This physical characteristic is called elongation and is something your materials suppliers can help you with to properly match the SPF and coating system to roof system and climate.
